The ban covers the entire State of Maharashtra for manufacture, usage, transport, distribution, wholesale & retail sale and storage, import of the plastic bags with handle and without handle, and the disposable products manufactured from Plastic & Thermocol (polystyrene) such as single use disposable dish, cups, plates, glasses, fork, bowl, container, disposable dish / bowl used for packaging of food in hotels, spoon, straw, non-woven polypropylene bags, cups/ pouches to store liquid, packaging with plastic to wrap or store the products, packaging of food items and food grain material etc. The officers of Municipal Councils and Corporations as well as the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and some other Govt. Agencies would be implementing this Regulation.
The Regulation also excludes the few sectors such as Medicines, Milk, all Export Packets, Wraps used in manufacturing goods and compostable plastic bags used for plant nurseries. However, there are strict conditions of mentioning of buyback price, recycling etc. on usage of plastic for these purposes. The Food Industry uses a high quality and thick micron plastic for packaging of the Processed Food for keeping it safe from the microbial contamination and product deterioration in storage. In short, sooner or later the Regulation will be implemented all over Maharashtra State and the new Regulation will be definitely affecting the Food Processing Industry. Therefore, the Food Sector should start looking for some alternatives such as bio-degradable plastic materials etc.
To understand more on this subject, the Food Processing Committee of MCCIA has organized an Interaction Meeting with the Joint Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Plastic Ban and way forward for Food Industry. We have also invited the officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Pune to guide the Food Processing stakeholders on the ‘Future Scenario and Alternatives’ available, if any, to reduce the plastic pollution in solid waste management.
For Whom: The program is mainly designed for Food Processing Industry, Entrepreneurs & Individuals who are in Food Business. The session could be suitable for Farmers’ Groups, Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs/FPOs), Women Self-Help-Groups-(SHGs), Mahila Bachat Gats, and other stakeholders in Food Processing, Students of Food Science, Food Traders, Food Service Providers, Caterers, Hotel & Restaurant Operators and Women Entrepreneurs can participate in the Meeting.
